Posted on February 13, 2009

Two authors will share the Lincoln Prize, which is awarded by the Gettysburg College for works about Abraham Lincoln, the U.S.' 16th president. The winners are James M. McPherson for Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief and ” by James M. McPherson, and Craig L. Symonds for Lincoln and His Admirals: Abraham Lincoln, the U.S. Navy and the Civil War by Craig L. Symonds.

Mr. McPherson, a Pulitzer Prize winner and a professor emeritus of American history at Princeton University, won the Lincoln Prize in 1998 for his book For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought in the Civil War. Mr. Symonds, a professor emeritus of American history at the United States Naval Academy, was a finalist in 1993. Each author will receive $25,000 and a bronze cast of Lincoln at a ceremony on April 7.
Congratulations to both authors! It's a great time to be a Lincoln scholar. With all the comparisons of President Barack Obama to President Lincoln, interest has never been higher in works on 16th president.
