White House Website Now Runs on Drupal

Posted on October 26, 2009

The White House website at whitehouse.gov is now operated with Drupal, an open source content management system. As CNET's Deep Tech blog explains open source does not always mean that technology will be easier to use or cheaper to run.

Open source is a terrible idea if the particular software is not well supported. Fortunately, Drupal is well supported by an active community but you still need people knowledgeable with Drupal to operate the website just like you would with any other software. These people won't work for free just because the software is open source.

The move has been made with other U.S. government websites. Recovery.org started using Drupal earlier this year.
