Whoopi Goldberg Writing Book About the Downside of Marriage

Posted on November 13, 2014

Actress and comedian Whoopi Goldberg is one of the few people with an EGOT: she's won an Oscar, a Tony, an Emmy and a Golden Globe. A host on The View, Whoopi is also an outspoken activist.

Now she's writing a heartfelt and funny memoir about love. Whoopi has been married three times, to Alvin Martin, to cinematographer David Claessen and to actor Lyle Trachtenberg (they divorced in 1995). She has also dated Ted Danson and Frank Langella. Whoopi is a mother of a daughter and a grandmother of two. But she's done with marriage. She has said that she has no plans to marry again, although she says she's sure it's a wonderful thing for lots of people.

Now Whoopi is going to share her thoughts on her marriages and relationships and why they didn't work out. And being Whoopi, the book will have plenty of wit and comedy. Mauro DiPreta, publisher of Hachette Books, announced that he had acquired the memoir. The book does not yet have a title, but will hit bookstores in September, 2015. It will be published as a hardcover, an ebook and an audio book.

Whoopi had this to say about writing the book: "I get to hear from a lot of different people about relationships and this got me trying to figure out why the divorce rate is SO high. It occurred to me that as one who has done it badly often, I might have some insight into why a person might not put her best foot forward in a relationship." Whoopi says she's come to realize that there are certain things that need to happen in her life, such as managing expectations, telling the truth and "reconciling true love with other aspects of your life, including wealth or even celebrity." She notes that it's hard to ever really know another person and their agenda and jokes, "but if someone says 'you complete me'…RUN!!!"

We feel sure this is one memoir that will be extremely entertaining.
