Will the Bush Twins' Speechwriter Please Stand Up?
Posted on August 31, 2004
In a groan-inducing, awkward monologue that brought the proceedings temporarily to a screeching halt, Jenna and Barbara Bush introduced their father via satellite at the Republican National Convention. Who in the world wrote that material? The girls struggled mightily with the lame, semi-risque jokes. Example: they told their grandmother Barbara Bush: "Gammie, we love you dearly, but you're just not hip." To the audience, Jenna confided, "She thinks Sex in the City is something that married people do, but never talk about." They deserved a better speech for their primetime debut. Jeff Greenfield of CNN speculated that "whoever wrote that Vegas-style material will be pounding the pavement by morning." We agree.
