Wine Publication to Cease Publishing After 35 Years

Posted on February 15, 2012

Min Online reports that the Quarterly Review of Wines is ceasing publication after 35 years. The magazine had a circulation of 140,000 and an affluent demographic. The publication ceased with the fall 2011 issue.

Publisher Richard L. Elia says in an editorial that in addition to the negative print magazine climate the romance of wine is also spent. He writes, "Beyond the usual explanations - upcoming retirements, the magazine world is in perilous shape, advertising is down, the digital age is king, out-of-state wine delivery problems - what initially attracted us to wine was the romance of it. Now this passion is spent."

Thomas Matthews, executive editor of Wine Spectator left a comment on the Min Online article disagreeing with Elia's assertion the the passion of wine is spent.
