Word of the Day: Wonkfest

Posted on October 22, 2004

During this election season, a few words and phrases have been repeated so many times that they have become emblematic of this race. First up: Wonkfest. So, for those that are not political junkies or journalists who have Electoral-Vote.com open on your computer at all times, here's the scoop. After the third presidential debate, political analysts Jeff Greenfield and Candy Crowley of CNN refused to call a winner (which was fairly obvious) and instead complained that the debate was a bit of a "wonkfest." It was "mere wonkery." Wonk: one who studies excessively. Synonyms: a scholar, a nerd, one who opines on the Sunday morning news shows. The third debate had -- gasp -- real substance. Actual facts and issues were discussed, something we happen to like around here. So, annoy Candy Crowley and Jeff Greenfield. Be a wonk. Discuss an issue. Write about something of substance. It's a good thing.
