World's Oldest Newspaper Dumps Print Version

Posted on February 14, 2007

The world's oldest newspaper is no longer publishing in print. The AP is reporting that Sweden's Post-och Inrikes Tidningar -- the world's oldest newspaper -- has now dumped its print edition and gone digital only. The newspaper was founded in 1645.

Hans Holm, who served as the chief editor of the newspaper for 20 years, told the AP, "We think it's a cultural disaster. It is sad when you have worked with it for so long and it has been around for so long."

It was founded in 1645 so that's about 362 years in print for the Post-och Inrikes Tidningar. They are sure to publish for many years to come in their digital format.

The Wikipedia entry for Post-och Inrikes Tidningar says it is the "government newspaper and gazette of Sweden." It was the leading source of information in Sweden during the 17th and 18th centuries.
