Writing With Your Ex Just an Office Away

Posted on March 4, 2005

Rush and Molloy share the scoop about The New York Times' newest columnist, John Tierney. Tierney, who takes over for the departing William Safire, will now have an office next to Maureen Dowd. And why is that awkward, you may ask? Well, it appears that Dowd and Tierney had a serious relationship years ago. The ending was not pretty.

The two started dating back in 1979, when they were reporters for the Washington Star. Writing for a women's magazine, Dowd said she knew the end was near when she found a little black dress that wasn't her size in Tierney's closet. "[He told] me we weren't getting married because he was involved with a rich, beautiful woman, and anyhow, he had never really loved me."..Tierney has disputed some of those details, but he and Dowd say they've remained friends.
Rush and Molloy asked the former twosome to comment on the situation and received a joint statement in reply saying, "We have agreed not to publish any embarrassing revelations about each other, unless one of us gets really, really desperate for a column."
