ZDNet, an online destination for people who want learn about technology, has announced that its parent company, Ziff-Davis Inc. plans to eliminate its tracking stock structure and make ZDNet a stand-alone, independent Internet company.

``We look forward to the prospect of ZDNet becoming a stand-alone company, focusing on the enormous opportunity for technology content, commerce and services on the Web,'' said Dan Rosensweig, president and CEO of ZDNet. ``As the 16th largest Web property worldwide, we have cemented our position as the leading technology resource on the Internet, and we will continue to deliver the ultimate user experience for anyone who is interested in buying, using and learning about technology. In addition, we are convinced that ZDNet is well positioned with the talent, creativity, and enthusiasm to maintain this leadership status in the online technology content arena.''

ZDNet.com launched on the Web in 1994 as the central resource for online versions of top Ziff-Davis brands such as PC Week, PC Magazine, Computer Shopper, PC/Computing, FamilyPC, and Inter@ctive Week. Soon after its launch, ZDNet introduced one of the first ecommerce sites, Computershopper.com. As a result of the restructuring, ZDNet will own the Computer Shopper brand.

``Because we had such an early and successful start, we are far ahead of many of the most powerful traditional media companies in taking full advantage of the Web,'' said Rosensweig. ``We have mastered the art of providing the best available content online, delivering the ultimate experience for our visitors through services and commerce opportunities meeting each individual's needs in a contextually relevant manner.''
