Ziff-Davis Publishing and Expedia to Launch Travel Magazine

Posted on January 28, 2000

Ziff-Davis Publishing has announced a joint agreement with Expedia Inc. to launch a new travel magazine. The new publication, which hasn't been named yet, will be unveiled later this year.

"Travel has been transformed by the Internet. Leisure and business travelers need a resource that shows how the Internet can be used as an aid to researching, planning and experiencing travel through inspiration," said Executive Vice President and Publishing Director Jim Spanfeller. "Our new magazine will quickly become the voice of travel on and off the Internet, delivering readers the service-oriented, Web-integrated information they seek in a beautiful and lush format."

"Expedia's trusted brand and leadership in online travel coupled with Ziff-Davis Publishing's powerful reader acquisition strategies and influential editorial make this the perfect match," said Richard Barton, CEO of Expedia Inc. "Together we will utilize our expertise to deliver the premiere travel magazine," Barton added.

The new magazine will launch as a bi-monthly publication and increase to monthly frequency within a year. With an initial rate base of 200,000, the publication will be sold on newsstands and by subscription, and through the Web, with a close association with Expedia.com.

The new travel publication is one of several upcoming launches planned for Ziff-Davis Publishing, which last month announced an agreement to be acquired by Willis Stein & Partners in partnership with James Dunning, Jr., who will be chairman of the company.

"Our rich publishing pedigree in the computing and Internet marketplace, powerful readership and marketing savvy give us the unique ability to launch many successful media properties in the new world of the Internet," said Ziff-Davis Publishing President and CEO Mike Perlis.
